The memory of the holy faithful Prince Peter and Princess Fevronia, in the paganism of David and Euphrosyne, Murom's miracle workers

This pious prince Peter [St. Peter - David, Prince of Murom, was the second son of the Murom prince Yuri Vladimirovich.

He became prince of Murom after his elder brother Vladimir Yuryovich, taking over the duchy on 18 December 1203. He was from a pious and holy family.

He was raised in the Orthodox faith and chastity in the city of Murom [Murom in antiquity was the center of the northern Rostov-Suzdal region, now a county city of Vladimir province.] and ruled his own principality, observing strict justice in everything.

When the time came, he married a pious princess Fevronia, who was also from a pious family.

She was taught to be pious.

Thus, being both holy and righteous men, blessed Peter and Fevronius loved purity and chastity and were always merciful, just, and meek.

They delivered from the power of the oppressors those who were oppressed, honored persons of pagan and priestly rank, provided them with material benefits, treated the poor with great mercy and diligently exercised fasting and abstinence.

Desiring according to the word of the Lord to inherit the earth [Matthew 5:5] and to obtain for themselves the everlasting happiness of the righteous, they have in addition in all other respects been very pleasing to Christ by their good works.

And when he was grown old, blessed Peter fell sick in his flesh, and was circumcised, and was called David after his father's name.

Likewise, the holy Princess Fevronia, fulfilling her sincere desire, cut her hair in paganism, receiving in the pagan title the name Euphrosyne and like her husband with unshakable faith and a pure conscience, presented herself, giving her soul into the hands of God.

One day, 25 June 1228, and according to the most holy Filaret, their death falls on 25 April 1228, with 25 April recognized as the day of their death, and 25 June as the day of the opening of their relics.

Their celebration began in the early 16th century, and at the Moscow Cathedral in 1547 it was decided to celebrate their memory locally. Subsequently (probably from 1552), this celebration became ubiquitous.] Thus, both holy spouses inherited the land of the meek, which they had so desired since youth.

After the death of the blessed Prince Peter, nobles and boyars mourned him as a father, citizens as their patron and protector, poor widows and food-deprived people as their provider and helper.

The bodies of the holy prince and princess were solemnly carried away by the people of the city and buried in a single coffin in the city of Muromu.

To this day the saints, by virtue of their honorable powers, work wonders to the glory of God for those who turn to them in faith ["Blessed David and Euphrosyne", says Archbishop Philaret, "were in their lives an example of Christian marriage, ready to sacrifice all for the Gospel commandment of an unbreakable union.

And now they pray the blessing of heaven upon the newlyweds, as many experiences of their afterlife show".

And as thou art a godly root, and a noble branch, so be thou good in godliness, and bless Peter; and thy wise wife, Fevronias, whom God hath approved in the world, and whose life is worthy of the saints.

Condac, vox 8: The prince of this world, and the glory of the moment, thinking, for this reason, piously lived in the world, you Peter, bought and your spouse, the wise Fevronia, charity and prayers pleased God.
